How to Immigrate to Canada through the Canada Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is one of three skilled trades programs administered under Canada’s Express Entry system. Each year, more than half of all immigrants to Canada are skilled workers and are welcomed by economic programs, including the Commonwealth Skills Trade Program. One of the immigration programs administered by the Expedited Immigration System is the Federal Skilled Jobs Program (FSTP). The FSTP is designed for foreigners with relevant trade experience who wish to immigrate to Canada. For qualified professionals seeking permanent residency in Canada, this is not the only option. There are other ways to immigrate to Canada without a degree, but you don’t need a fast track program like Express Entry offers.
FSTP offers professionals of all backgrounds the opportunity to submit a profile and be invited to submit visa application documents. With labor shortages prevalent in various occupations in Canada, it works like a lottery as the odds of selection are relatively high.
The Canadian government publishes a list of eligible occupations each year, and international applicants and temporary workers can submit a profile to see if they have been selected. The craft trade is included in the list of Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC). You can live and work in Canada by applying for permanent residency through the Federal Skilled Trades Canada Program. After some time, you can also naturalize as a Canadian citizen.

Experience in one of the industries listed in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) is required. NOCs have five skill levels, from skill level 0 to skill levels A, B, C, and D. Federal Skilled Trades Program skill requirements must match NOC A or B skill levels.
There is a limit of 100 employees for occupations at Skill Level A, but there is no limit for employment at Skill Level B, which covers the following positions:
- Major Group 72 – Industrial, electrical, and construction trades;
- Major Group 73 – Maintenance and equipment operation trades;
- Major Group 92 – Processing, manufacturing, and utility supervisors and central control operators;
- Minor Group 632 – Chefs and cooks;
- Minor Group 633 – Butchers and bakers;
Educational requirements
Although the Federal Skilled Trades Program does not have strict educational requirements, having some qualifying education will help you stand out. You must make notice of any of the following in your application if you have them:
- A Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary diploma;
- A completed foreign credential and Education Credential Assessment from an approved agency shows that your education equals a secondary (high school) or post-secondary Canadian degree.
If you meet one of these qualifications, you’ll receive more points and have a better chance of having your profile selected from the candidate pool.
Language requirements
Because English and French are both official languages in Canada, the fundamental requirements in both languages must be completed. The necessary language proficiency for speaking, listening, and reading is the Canadian Language Benchmark – CLB 5. (CLB4). In addition, you must submit the results of your speaking, reading, listening and writing tests.
