Application Process for Fulbright Scholarship
To apply for a Fulbright scholarship in 2023, please follow the steps listed below in order:
1. Submit an online form
You must gather a range of materials to submit with your Fulbright application in order for the USEFP to evaluate your eligibility. Your application must be accompanied by all required materials.
2. Create degree and academic transcripts
Any transcripts and diplomas from a 4-year undergraduate program or one that is comparable; comparable degrees include ACCA or international 3-year bachelor’s degrees. Transcripts and an MPhil or MS degree are required for PhD applicants. If you’re in your final year of undergraduate study and plan to graduate by December of this year, you may also apply.
The USEFP considers all aspects of your transcripts, not just your GPA. They consider your educational background, the courses you took, and how well you performed in each subject. They also take into account the fact that various universities use various grading systems. Although there is no required GPA for applicants, the majority of Fulbright recipients have excellent academic records. The Fulbright panel evaluates applicants in a number of ways, including undergraduate academic performance.
3. Take the TOFEL and GRE General Exam.
You may include either your unofficial GRE score from the exam day or, if you have already received your official score, that score in your application. Each applicant must use the code 9388 to ask ETS to provide an official score report directly to USEFP. At the time of application, GRE general (international) test results are necessary. A good GRE score is 315 or higher for engineering and science, and 310 or higher for all other areas. No GRE subject test is necessary.
On all the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE, a score of 138 is necessary to be considered for the Fulbright. Yet, most candidates who are approved have GRE scores that are in the upper percentiles. If you take the GRE more than once, you can only disclose your best result because Fulbright will only consider it. At the time of application submission, the TOEFL is NOT necessary. If you are invited for an interview, you must take the TOEFL exam. IELTS is inadmissible.
4. Prepare two essays
The Fulbright application requires you to submit two essays. Each essay needs to be 800 words or less and should be completed in the area allotted on the application form. Write simply and clearly in your essays so that the Fulbright panel, which is unfamiliar with your world, may better understand you. You must develop a marketing plan for yourself before you begin writing the essays. It usually takes successful candidates 4-6 weeks to write and revise their essays.
5. Three letters of recommendation are necessary.
By the application deadline, you must include three recommendations with your application. You can have three letters of recommendation from academic sources, two from professionals and one from academics, or two from each. In other words, you absolutely need one academic reference letter. Your referees must complete the reference forms included in the application package and then seal the envelopes with their signatures and stamps. An online form will be delivered to your referees through email once you’ve submitted your application online.
The question of “who should write your references” is not predetermined. Because USEFP does not want to put your existing work in jeopardy for the application process, it is occasionally not possible to request that your employer write your reference. Simply ask those who are familiar enough with you to respond. It might be a professor, previous boss, or researcher.
6. Create an academic resume.
The space provided on the application form should be filled out with a most recent and current resume. It is not necessary to have it in a particular format.
7. Submit Online Form
Application fees for the Fulbright program are not required. Online applications are required.
8. Consultation
You might receive an invitation to a panel interview after your written application has been submitted and approved. By mid-September, judgments regarding interviews are made, and interviews are held in October. If USEFP does not contact you by October, it is assumed that you have not been chosen. While not a guarantee of admission, the interview is a good indicator of selection. An interview panel of four people conducts the 15 to 30 minute interviews. It is not required that you have taken the TOEFL exam by the interview date, but you must bring your TOEFL registration slip with you on the day of the interview.
