Applications for the Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarship 2022 in UK for Developing Countries are now open. The Scholarships are offered to support citizens of developing Commonwealth countries to study at a UK university for a period of one year.
This is carried out as part of a PhD that’s being undertaken in a candidate’s country, under the joint supervision of a UK supervisor and home country.
More About Scholarship
The year period of studying in the UK supported by the Commonwealth Split-site scholarship (CSC) can be taken at any stage during your PhD study, providing this is justified in your study plan. It could be divided into 2 or more periods, with no more than 1 year elapsing between each award term.
If you haven’t already started your PhD at your application time, you will be eligible to spend a maximum of six months in the UK in your first year of study.

These scholarships are for:
- 1 year study at a UK university as part of an applicant’s doctoral studies in their home country, starting from around Jan 2022
- All applicants who’re registered (or will be registered by 2021 September) for a PhD at a university in any eligible Commonwealth country
- Studying at a UK university with which your home university has an established institutional or departmental link
- Studying at a UK university that has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Ensure to view a full list of UK universities with part funding agreements.
Eligibility
- Being a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or being a British Protected Person
- Be a permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
- Registered for a PhD at a university in any eligible Commonwealth country by the time your scholarship is confirmed (September 2021)
- Be that an institutional or departmental link exists between your home university and your speculated UK university. This link should be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals – see section on ‘Tenure and placement’ for further details. Both supervisors should provide a supporting statement which provides further details of the link to ensure your application is eligible.
- Be sure to be available to start your academic studies in the UK by January 2022
- By around December 2021, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honors standard, or a second-class degree and a postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
- Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

The Value of Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship
Each fellowship provides:
- Approved airfare from your home country to UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC won’t reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before your award is confirmed)
- Approved tuition fees
- Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of around £1,116 per month, or £1,369 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2020-2021 levels)
- Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
- Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
- If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £478 per month for the first child, and £118 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
Note that: The CSC’s family allowances are all intended to be only a contribution towards the final cost of maintaining your family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and you must be able to supplement these allowances to support any family members who come to the UK with you.

What are Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships?

Am I eligible?
The scholarships are for study starting in the UK in September/October 2022 and are aimed at high-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to deliver impact in their home countries.
To be eligible, candidates must be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time their scholarship is confirmed. There must also be an institutional or departmental link between the candidate’s home university and their proposed UK university/Department.
